SURPLUS FOOD DISTRIBUTION SET TODAY, THURSDAY

The final quarterly distribution of surplus government food to eligible Virginia Beach residents will take place today and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Open Door Chapel, 3177 Virginia Beach Blvd.

Letters have been mailed to those found to be eligible to receive the foods, but others may qualify. Application may be made on site during distribution.

The mass giveaways of the U.S. Department of Agriculture surplus commodities have been ongoing since 1982. Last year, Congress slashed the program's budget, leaving the bureaucracy intact but eliminating most food shipments to states.

Supplies remaining after this month's distribution will go to the state's six Second Harvest food banks. Local food pantries will be able to use these leftovers as well as any future shipments of surplus foods to give families emergency help.

Foods to be given away this week include butter, potatoes, pears, green beans, peanut butter, tomatoes, peaches and applesauce.

For guidelines on who may qualify for the free food, call the Department of Social Services at 486-7223. by CNB
