Virginia Appeals Court Judge Bernard G. Barrow was in the critical care unit Tuesday in a Charlottesville hospital after collapsing behind the wheel of his car Monday night.
Barrow, 57, apparently left his office about 6 p.m. Monday to go jogging, as he does several times a week. He got in his car afterward, pulled up to a stop sign and collapsed. His car then rolled into the stop sign.
A police officer behind him at the intersection saw him slump over and went to his aid.
Barrow was unconscious in the critical care unit at Martha Jefferson Hospital late Tuesday.
The judge recently had announced plans to retire in June. Barrow was one of 10 original judges appointed to the Virginia Court of Appeals in 1985.
Barrow, a former state delegate, spent most of his career in Virginia Beach, as a lawyer and as a Circuit Court judge for five years.
He moved to Charlottesville in 1990. At one point, Barrow was a top candidate for the Virginia Supreme Court.
The judge, an avid runner for years, was a familiar figure on the roads in the North End of the Virginia Beach before he moved to Charlottesville. When announcing his plans to retire, Barrow said he would spend the first six months completing a doctoral dissertation. Fairfax County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Annunziata was appointed by the General Assembly to fill his post when he retires. by CNB
