HAMPTON BOY, 15, CHARGED IN SHOOTING AT SCHOOL BUS STOP

A middle school student was shot in the leg with a handgun Friday morning at a school bus stop in the city's East End, police said.

A 15-year-old suspended Warwick High School student, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was charged Friday with maiming and use of a firearm. He is being held in Newport News juvenile detention.

Police spokeswoman Patricia L. Mahaffy said a preliminary investigation indicated that the shooting was probably accidental.

The wounded student, 13-year-old Jason Williams, attends Hines Middle School. He was treated at Sentara Hampton General Hospital and released.

The incident occurred at Wickham Avenue and 14th Street at about 8 a.m.

The suspect's mother said her son has been on suspension from Warwick High School for fighting on a school bus.

She said she did not know where her son had gotten a gun.

``He told me that he found it,'' she said.
