GIRL, BOY SHOT IN FRONT OF APARTMENT BOTH WERE WOUNDED AND TAKEN TO HOSPITALS. NEIGHBORS SAID THAT FOUR SHOTS WERE HEARD.

A 17-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy were shot Friday evening in front of their apartment building on Johnstons Road.

The victims were identified as 17-year-old Keisha Harrison of the 1300 block of Johnstons Road and Dajon Yearty, 3, of the same Johnstons Road location.

Preliminary reports indicated that Harrison was wounded in the leg. The 3-year-old's wound was not revealed Friday night but he was listed in critical but stable condition, according to Larry Hill of the Norfolk Police Department.

The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. in the Oakmont Apartments in the 1300 block. Witnesses said the victims were near the front door of their building when four shots were fired from an unknown location.

The child was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and was to be admitted to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, said Lois Firestone, the administrative supervisor at King's Daughters.

The teenager was taken to Sentara Norfolk General. Her condition was not available Friday night.

``What is so bad about it is that it could have been anybody's kid that got hit,'' said Teresa Shannon, 24, who lives at Oakmont Apartments with her two boys. ``I've got to get out of this war zone.''

Martha Perry, who has lived in the complex for 15 years, said the neighborhood has only recently become violent.

``It didn't use to be like this,'' she said.

Hill said police had no suspects Friday night. He asked that anyone with information call Crime Line at 441-5100.
