MELINDA I. SYKES

Melinda Ilene Stephens Sykes, 45, of the 1100 block of Robin Nest Road, a nurse, died April 5, 1995, in Moncrief Army Community Hospital, Fort Jackson, S.C.

Mrs. Sykes was born in Portsmouth. She was employed with the Baptist Medical Center Baptist Hospital. She was a member of Abundant Life Ministry, Columbia, S.C. She attended Daniel Chapel, Fort Jackson, S.C. She was a former member of New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, Portsmouth.

Survivors include her husband, Walter Alexander Sykes of Columbia; two daughters, Shanon Alvina Sykes of Charlotte, N.C. and Antinette Renee Sykes of Norfolk; two sons, Walter Alexander Sykes Jr. and Brian A. Sykes, both of Columbia, S.C.; her mother and stepfather, Susie Boykin and Livie James Boykin, both of Portsmouth; three brothers, Robert L. Stephens and Alvin Stephens, both of New York City and Ronald L. Stephens of Los Angeles, Calif.; two aunts; one uncle; nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Centennial Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert A. Addison. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Viewing will begin at noon Tuesday in Corprew Funeral Home. The family will be at the home of her mother, Susie Boykin, 1311 Lindsay Ave. and will assemble there for the funeral service.
