Carl Cleveland Thorpe Jr., age 79, died Sunday, April 16, 1995, at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin. He was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and a retired farmer. He was a devoted member of Newsoms Baptist Church and had he lived to August 1995 would have completed 56 consecutive years of perfect attendance at the church. He served as secretary of the Sunday School Department of the church for 52 years.
Mr. Thorpe was also a member of the Newsoms Ruritan Club and was a past board member of the Farm Bureau and Southern States Coop. His parents were the late Carl Cleveland Sr. and Pearl Esther Thorpe and his stepmother, Geneva Ferguson Thorpe.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Mae Drake Thorpe; a daughter, Marion T. Strickland of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; a son, Roger Keith Thorpe of Greenville, N.C.; two sisters, Catherine T. Walter of Clinton, Md. and Pearl T. Newsom of Emporia; one brother, James Ray Thorpe of Pearlsburg; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 19, 1995 at 3 p.m. at Newsoms Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Williams. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins, on Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Boykins Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad or to the Building Fund of the church. Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins Chapel, is handling arrangements.
