THE PIES WERE FLYING TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE MARCH OF DIMES

Revenge was sweet for participants in a March of Dimes fund-raiser sponsored by Bill Lewis Chevrolet last Thursday.

Very sweet.

Thirteen employees, including owner Ashton Lewis, got blasted with about 300 sticky pies in the dealership's first ``Pie-A-Thon.''

Pies were thrown for a minimum donation of $2, but two of the 15 pies thrown at Ashton Lewis garnered $100 each.

One of the high-priced pies, paid for by Gary McMahan of Mass Mutual, was thrown by Lewis' daughter, Susan. The other was purchased and thrown by Lewis Wood of Hampton Chevrolet.

Nearly $800 was raised for the charity.

Sandler Foods donated six cases of whipped cream for the first 200 pies. A trip to a nearby grocery store for more whipped cream produced another 100 pies.

An average of 20 pies was thrown at each of the 15 volunteers, said Gina Wilkinson, assistant office manager of the dealership. She described the scene as ``a lovely mess.'' ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by Steve Earley
