ROBERT W. STEPHENSON

Robert Worth Stephenson, longtime resident of 1436 Clay St., was born Feb. 8, 1914, in Handsom, Va., and died April 25, 1995, at age 81 after a long illness.

Mr. Stephenson was an employee of Union Bag-Camp Corporation for 40 years and retired as superintendent of the Pulp Mill Division. He served for 12 years as president of the Franklin Bronco Club and was a member of the Sunbeam Hunt Club. He was governor of the Franklin Moose Lodge and commander of the Franklin Coast Guard Auxiliary. He taught boat safety classes at both Paul D. Camp Community College and Chowan College. Mr. Stephenson belonged to the Franklin Senior Citizens' Association and High Street Methodist Church and often attended Black Creek Baptist Church. He devoted much of his time to community leadership and service and will be missed by his family and many area residents.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha Bryant Stephenson, and is survived by his current wife, Doris B. Stephenson; sister, Josephine Howell; sisters-in-law, Virginia and Hazel Stephenson; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Carl Fields of San Antonio, Texas, and Faye and Russell Evans of Sanford, N.C.; and grandchildren, Joanna and Robert Fields and Robert's wife, Robin. Survivors also include stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Hoyle Green, Carolyn and Jerry Casey; stepson and daughter-in-law, Harold and Pam Turner; and stepgrandchildren, Michael and Michelle Green, Robert White, Ricky White, Renee Hubert and Terry Casey and David, Chris and Tabetha Turner.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home and other times at 1436 Clay St. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home by the Rev. David Erickson and the Rev. Wayne Underwood. Contributions to the American Cancer Society, in lieu of flowers, are suggested by the family.
