JONES VISITS DEVELOPMENT GROUP

Third District U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr. has been invited to hear about the work of the River City Community Development Corp., which aims to bring economic growth to poor neighborhoods.

``The message that I want to get across is that what we're doing is certainly in line with the Contract With America,'' River City's President and CEO, Lenora Jarvis-Mackey, said before the meeting.

``If you're talking about self-sufficiency and self-reliance, that's what we're all about.''

The development group, which held its second leadership seminar Friday night and is cohosting a community picnic today, is working to revitalize a once-thriving business district in a predominantly black neighborhood south of Ehringhaus Street.

The group also aims to empower residents of poor neighborhoods to lead themselves into prosperity.

Jarvis-Mackey said she hopes to enlist the congressman in efforts to secure federal funding for River City's projects, which, she said, will lead to job creation and a larger tax base.

``I would certainly love to have his support,'' she said. by CNB
