Pier fishing along the Outer Banks was fairly good over the weekend.
Northern beach pier fishermen caught plenty of small blues, some nice speckled trout and small bottom fish Saturday. Most of the blues were taken on jiggers or bucktail rigs.
On Sunday, Avalon Pier reported good catches of tailor blues throughout the day. Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier and at Jennette's Pier caught blues and speckled trout during the afternoon.
Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier landed lots of small blues, some sea mullet and some small gray trout. Gusty winds and rough seas on Monday slowed fishing.
On Hatteras Island, anglers on Rodanthe Pier caught plenty of one- to two-pound blues and a few sea mullet. Avon Pier reported plenty of mullet and small blues taken. Fishermen on Frisco Pier caught mullet, blues and several Spanish mackerel.
Anglers surf fishing along the northern beaches caught only a few bottom fish and tailor blues over the weekend. In the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton, some large sea mullet and tailor blues were landed. The best of the sea mullet fishing was south of Ramp 23.
Friday night at Cape Point, approximately 40 drum were beached. Action slowed Saturday night because of a wind shift, but improved Sunday with plenty of drum taken before midnight.
Yellowfin tuna fishing southeast of Oregon Inlet was fair Saturday. Charter boat releases included a sailfish by the ``Sizzler,'' and a blue marlin by the ``Temptation.''
On Sunday, fishing improved with some tuna, some big dolphin and scattered wahoo taken. Seas were rough Monday, but anglers managed to catch fair numbers of dolphin and tuna.
Off Hatteras, blue water anglers have landed yellowfin tuna, dolphin and wahoo over the last several days.
Northeasterly winds should produce some good speckled trout fishing in the sound. Nice catches have been reported recently from the Duck Island and off island area.
The water temperature Monday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 56 degrees. by CNB
