ALL-WOMEN TEAM WINS OCRACOKE SURF TOURNAMENT

The Tide Runners, an all-female team from Ocracoke, N.C., won the 12th annual Ocracoke Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament with a two-day catch worth 115 points.

Most of the points were scored when the six-member team landed two big bluefish, each 32 inches long and each worth 55 points. The team consisted of Mary Nolan, Ann Ehringhaus, Jatta Carr, Joyce O'Neal, Sue Pentz and Betty Salem.

The Six-Pack Anglers of Pennsylvania were second with 107 points; third went to the Surfside Anglers of Nags Head with 75.

Perhaps the week's outstanding Virginia catch was a 41 1/4-pound striped bass, boated near the north end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel by Herman Bunch Jr. of Suffolk.

On the freshwater scene, Michael Whittaker of Chesapeake earned Virginia citation awards for outstanding catches of four species: largemouth bass, bream, yellow perch and shellcracker.
