NORFOLK COLLEGIATE VALEDICTORIAN: [MELANIE GRACE FIELDS]

Editor's note: Melanie Grace Fields, a Virginia Beach resident and valedictorian of the class of '95 at Norfolk Collegiate School was left out of the June 25 graduation issue of The Beacon.

Name: Melanie Grace Fields.

Age: 17.

Parents: Diane W. and A. Ellett Fields Jr.

GPA: 97.5 on a 100-point scale.

Extracurricular activities: Member of the Senior Company at Wilkins School of Dance, peer tutor, Circle of Peace volunteer and Haygood United Methodist Church nursery caretaker.

College plans: To attend the University of Virginia.

Career plans: To incorporate my dance training with the traditional applications of psychology to become a dance therapist. I plan to work with children suffering from traumatic experiences.

Secret to academic success: I do my homework and learn things the first time. Many subjects in high school depend on knowledge from previous years. Learn it once, learn it well and use it later.

Worst habit: Procrastination with homework and papers. I never start anything until really late at night.

Favorite book: ``Rebecca'' by Daphne DuMaurier and ``The Thorn Birds'' by Colleen McCullough.

Favorite TV show: ``ER.''

High school memoir: I will remember the strong sense of family and home at Norfolk Collegiate. There were never unfriendly faces. Anyone was willing to lend a hand or a shoulder if I needed it.

Advice for junior class I am leaving behind: Don't be afraid to try. Apply for all the scholarships you can and apply at all colleges you want. Watch deadlines! They creep up! If you never try, you'll never know how good you are.

Person I admire most: Barbara Bush, because of her work and dedication in children's issues and education. by CNB
