HOME RUN BRINGS PLENTY OF HIGH FIVES SHELBY BROOKS, A RIGHTHANDED THIRD BASEMAN, HELPED HIS CLASS A ALL-STARS TEAM WIN 13-6.

SHELBY BROOKS stepped up to the plate with two runners on base and proceeded to follow traditional baseball/softball strategy.

He took two pitches and then hit the ball to right - deep to right. The centerfielder and rightfielder ran back toward the fence, ran out of room and watched helplessly as the ball landed 15 feet on the other side.

Brooks, a righthanded batter, is strong enough to hit the ball out of the park without pulling it. He crossed home plate and slapped plenty of high fives with his teammates.

The tall, rangy third baseman plays for Paramount Builders and was one of three players from that team to make the roster for the Virginia Beach Department of Parks and Recreation Men's Class A league All-Star game. His shot put his team up by 10 runs and the Class A team went on to win the game against the Class B All-Stars, 13-6.

``Shelby had a great game for us,'' said his coach for the All-Star game, Sang Han. ``I was glad to see it. I hope he doesn't hit like that against us in the second half of the season.''

Han plays for Crazy Charlie's, which took a 9-0 record into the rest of the season.

``We have six games to play,'' said Han, who also credited his own All-Star players with contributing to the win. Crazy Charlie's placed infielder Mike Southworth, outfielder Pete Zell and catcher Steve Roenker on the All-Star team. Brooks' teammate, catcher Ed Laws, went for 4-for-5 at the plate. Winning pitcher Greg Miller contributed a home run to help his cause.

There were six other All-Star games at Princess Anne Park two weeks ago.

Spouses, children, girlfriends, boyfriends and just plain old friends filled the bleachers around the huge complex to watch the cream of the city's softball teams go against each other.

Each team consisted of up to three players from the same team. The teams select the players to represent them in All-Star competition.

In other games:

Men's Duffer League, Division ``12/13'' All-Stars edged the Men's C, Division ``6/8/10'' team by a score of 13-12. The duffers from ``15/16'' repeated the one-run victory against the Men's Church Leaguers, 12-11.

Han and company earned their second win of the night with a 14-4 win against Men's C League, Division ``5/7/9/11''.

The Coed Recreation, Divisions ``3/4'', defeated their counterparts from Divisions ``5/6/7/10/13'' by a score of 8-7.

The Coed Competitive team beat a Coed Recreation team, 35-1, in the only lopsided game of the night.
