THIRD-ROUND PICK POUNDS IS OUT WITH BACK PROBLEMS

It's been a back-breaking summer so far for the Washington Redskins.

The team announced Saturday that defensive back Darryl Pounds, the third-round pick in the draft last spring, has a pair of bulging discs in his lower back and will be held out of practices indefinitely.

Pounds, 5-feet-10 and 177 pounds, played safety at Nicholls State. The Redskins were hoping to move him to cornerback once he returns. He was hurt earlier in the week and isn't expected to report until Monday afternoon.

Trainer Bubba Tyer also announced that defensive tackle Bobby Wilson, taken from the field in a golf cart early into Friday's practice, will undergo an MRI on his back Monday at Arlington Hospital.

Tyer, team physician Gordon Avery and team orthopedic surgeon Charles Jackson will be able to determine the extent of Wilson's injury and how long he might be out.

NEW RECEIVER: The Redskins have invited Ricky Carrigan to camp for a tryout. Carrigan, 5-11, 185 pounds, hasn't played football in three years, when he was an all-conference receiver at Compton (Cal.) Community College and the state junior-college 100- and 200-meter track champion. A knee injury caused him to miss the next two football seasons, after which he transferred to Merritt College in Oakland, where he again was the state 100- and 200-meter track champion. He transferred to San Francisco State last fall but did not play football. He applied for the NFL's supplemental draft, but was not selected.

HOLDOUT REPORT: The Redskins and Ralph Cindrich, agent for second-round pick Cory Raymer, talked on Saturday. Washington was mulling a counterproposal by Cindrich that would pay Raymer, a center from Wisconsin, $399,000.

There was no reported progress in negotiations with top draft pick Michael Westbrook.

INJURY: Tight end Jamie Asher pulled his left hamstring in Saturday afternoon's scrimmage. He will miss two to three days. by CNB
