RONALD MARSHALL

Ronald Marshall, age 72, Newport News native and noted Tidewater musician, died on August 8, 1995, at Riverside Hospital, Newport News.

Mr. Marshall was known throughout the state of Virginia as a performer and teacher of the violin and viola.

He was the Musical Director of the Feldman Chamber Music Society and violist of the Feldman String Quartet since its inception in 1946.

He was concertmaster of the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra and principal violist of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Norfolk, Va. for 20 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a frequent guest artist with other orchestras and played innumerable solo concerts on violin, viola and viola d'amore.

He was a founder and conductor of the Peninsula Youth Orchestra, the oldest of its kind in Virginia. He taught and served as String Consultant for the Va. Beach Public Schools.

He was adjunct faculty member at Old Dominion University, The College of William and Mary, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Christopher Newport University.

Mr. Marshall was an active composer of orchestra, chamber and solo music, having many commissions and performances to his credit. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Newport News.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lake Drummond Marshall. He is survived by two sons, Richard E. Marshall of Lancaster, Pa., and Kenneth W. Marshall of Newport News; one brother, Arthur R. Marshall of Houston, Texas; and two sisters, Dora M. Mullins of Virginia Beach, Va. and Mary E. Marshall of Arizona and Virginia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Newport News. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
