JEAN PORTER HOW

Jean Porter How, 73, of 422 Bobby Jones Drive, died August 11, 1995, in her residence surrounded by family.

Born and raised in New London, Connecticut, Jean Porter was the daughter of Edith and John Porter. A graduate of Williams Memorial Institute, she was with the library staff at New London Public Library prior to marriage to her husband of 49 years, Coast Guard Captain Archibald Barwell ``Barry'' How. During her life, she became actively involved in the many communities in which she lived. She served as President of the Coast Guard Academy Wives Club, was a member of the board of directors of the Historical Society of York, Pennsylvania, and the Coast Guard Relief Fund, Washington, D.C.

She is survived by her children, Susan H. Scurria of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, William B. How of Acton, Massachusetts, and LCDR Steven How of Alexandria, Virginia. Grandchildren include Jacqueline S. Shapaker of Nashville, Tennessee, Amy Scurria of Houston, Texas, and Bharat and Pauravi Shippen-How of Acton, Mass.

Mrs. How leaves not only her family but her beloved friends whose importance so positively influenced her lifestyle.

A memorial service will be held at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, Va., at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15.

On Wednesday, August 16, a graveside service will be performed at 3:00 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23513.
