BENNIE ANDREW JUEL

Bennie Andrew Juel was born March 12, 1923, in Little River, S.C., and died Thursday, August 17, 1995, in Julia's Home For Adults, in Chesapeake. He was a son of the late Christian Alonzo and Jewell Justice Juel, and was the beloved husband of Pearl Modlin Juel, and resided at 1900 Baltic Ave., 23451.

Mr. Juel's career consisted of 30 years of pure love and pride for the Navy. He joined the Navy May 1, 1941, and retired as Chief Aviation Ordnanceman on May 1, 1971. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict, and of Vietnam. As Chief Aviation Ordnanceman serving in 1966 on the USS America, Juel invented from available spare parts a loader for the aircraft bombs, which is able to more effectively load planes with the necessary ordnance.

The Juel Loader is a mechanical-hydraulic device and permits fast, safe, and accurate loadings. This loader, or one with some modification, is used on modern U.S. Naval Carriers and Air Bases.

On his nine-month tour around the world aboard the SS Enterprise in 1965, he brought back a Kangaroo, named Matilda, which he presented to the Norfolk Zoo. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Virginia Beach, and of the Fleet Reserve.

In addition to his beloved wife, Pearl, he is survived by one daughter, Diane Juel Stokes of Virginia Beach; two sons, Christian A. Juel of Columbia, S.C., and Bennie A. Juel Jr. of Chesapeake, Va.; one brother, Frank N. Juel of Little River, S.C.; one sister, Mary J. Manos of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held Monday, August 21st, at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, by the Rev. James C. Rittenhouse and the Rev. Ted A. James. The family will receive friends in the Maestas Funeral Home Baltic Avenue Chapel Sunday night from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
