WEEKLY BRIEFING

FELIX RESCUE: Members of the Search and Rescue Crew from Oceana Naval Air Station fought high seas and high winds caused by Hurricane Felix to rescue a 62-year-old seaman from the deck of a grounded sailboat. Pilots Lt. Dan Honken and Lt. Jerre Bauman, along with crew members Jeffrey Zascuha, Gregory Daughty, Ross Daniel, Todd Mayes and Jason Ashley hoisted the seaman from the pitching deck of his 31-foot boat and took him to the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Station. He was treated for minor injuries. The boat had run aground Aug. 15 in the Albemarle Sound, about 18 miles south of Elizabeth City.

CLEANING UP: Sailors from commands throughout Hampton Roads have been renovating neighborhood parks as part of Project Pride, a campaign to repair and renovate aging facilities. On Aug. 11, sailors from Norfolk Naval Air Station repaired and painted equipment at the Lafayette Park on Granby Street, next to the Norfolk Zoo. In July sailors from other commands repaired two parks in Virginia Beach. The goal is to renovate one park a month.

JOB FAIR: The Non-Commissioned Officer's Association will host a job fair on Aug. 31 at Scope, on Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fair is designed to help separating and retiring military personnel find civilian jobs; admission is free to all personnel who have decided to leave active service. Those who attend may want to first go to a free Career Transition Seminar that will be offered the day before at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. The seminar, from 1 to 4 p.m., will provide tips on resume writing and preparation, interview techniques and salary negotiation.

POW/MIA DAY: A ceremony honoring America's former prisoners of war and those still missing in action will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at Fort Monroe's Continental Park. It will be hosted by Fort Monroe, Fort Eustis, Langley Air Force Base and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Brooks E. Kleber, a POW during World War II, will be guest speaker. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will include a flyover from Langley and a 21-gun salute.

DOOLITTLE HONORED: The Joint Warfighting Center at Fort Monroe will officially name its renovated operational facility ``Doolittle Hall'' in honor of Gen. James H. Doolittle, the World War II aviator who led the first air strikes on Japan.

Ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 22. Air Force Maj. Gen. Joseph J. Redden, who commands the center, will be guest speaker.

AIRCRAFT SHOW: See what it was like to fly in a Navy ``Wildcat'' or an Army ``Lodestar'' during World War II. The Old Dominion Squadron of the Confederate Air Force will sponsor a display of these planes and other WWII era aircraft Monday to Sept. 3.

The show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the Hampton Roads Regional Airport, Route 58, Chesapeake. Admission is $5 per adult and $2 per child. Admission is free for infants and those who wear their military uniform.
