ARTHUR E. JONES JR.

Arthur Edward Jones Jr., 76, of 202 West Constance Woods Drive, died Aug. 29, 1995.

Born in Farmville, Va., he was the son of the late Mabel Brinkley and Arthur Edward Jones. He graduated from Suffolk High School and the University of Richmond. He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was All Pro Pittsburgh Steelers Rookie of the Year and was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He was a football coach, teacher, assistant principal and principal of Suffolk High School. He was founder, headmaster and first administrator, of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. He was the owner of Art Jones Travel Service and was a former First Citizen of the City of Suffolk. He was also Chairman of the Harvest Festival III. He was a member of the Suffolk Rotary Club, Suffolk Elks BPOE Lodge No. 685, and Oxford United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Georgie Gay Jones; daughter, Mary Gay Jones Bell; and son-in-law, James Weldon Bell of Nags Head, N.C. The family will receive visitors at R.W. Baker Funeral Home from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today.. Services and interment will be private. The family requests that flowers and memorial gifts be omitted.
