DISMAL SWAMP CANAL TO CLOSE

Spotty rainfall in the Dismal Swamp has failed to fill Lake Drummond, forcing a temporary closing of the the Dismal Swamp Canal to boat traffic at 3 p.m. Sept. 6, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced in Norfolk Tuesday.

Lake Drummond, about halfway between Chesapeake's Deep Creek section and South Mills, N.C., provides the canal with water, and the Army Engineers have an agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to close the waterway when the lake level falls below 3.6 feet at the canal spillway.

The Dismal Swamp Canal will remain closed until rains replenish Lake Drummond, the Army Engineers said.

The canal is an alternate Intracoastal Waterway route between Southeastern Virginia and the Albemarle Sound. Boats may use the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal between Great Bridge and Coinjock, N.C., while the Dismal Swamp Canal is closed. by CNB
