TAKING AN ACCOUNTING OF CITY'S TENNIS COURTS

Tennis, anyone?

Don't expect to play on the courts at the old Cradock High School. They have been in disrepair since the school closed.

A sign on a gate leading to the courts suggests that anyone interested in playing should go to the Wilson High courts. But that sign is so old, it refers to a summer session at what is now Hunt-Mapp Middle School.

In the late 1970s, these six courts were constructed at Cradock. In 1979, lights were added. The courts at Cradock cost about $10,000 each. About $13,000 reportedly was spent to light the courts.

Once, the Portsmouth Tennis Patrons Association, presenting a request for development of better tennis facilities, asked for the construction of one court per 2,000 people. The Department of Parks and Recreation, in the city's annual operating budget, reports it maintains 32 tennis courts. That means Portsmouth has about one court per 3,000 people.
