BERTHA R. BELL

Bertha Roslyn Bell of Virginia Beach, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 31, 1995. Bertha was born in Seattle, Wash., on October 27, 1927.

A devout Catholic, she was a member of the Church of the Epiphany Catholic Church in Richmond where she served as a communicant, choir member and Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the Church of the Ascension Catholic Church in Virginia Beach. Bertha graduated from the DePaul School of Nursing in 1952 and entered the Sisters of Charity, serving as a Nun for more than 20 years. She received her Doctorate in Education from the College of William and Mary in 1988.

Bertha recently retired from the Medical College of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing where she served as an assistant professor of Community Health Nursing. She provided leadership to Gamma Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, a nursing honor society, as a founding and charter member, and served as its president on two separate occasions.

She is survived by her family including her sister, Katherine T. Friesz and William R. Friesz. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Thomas L. Friesz, William L. Friesz, Michael A. Friesz, Katherine A. Gartland, Patrick J. Friesz, Deborah L. Boone, Matthew W. Friesz, as well as their respective families. Bertha also leaves many dear friends and colleagues in Richmond and Tidewater, Va.

A funeral mass will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 1995, in Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, by the Father James Parke. Burial will be private. A Christian wake service will be held this evening at 6 p.m. in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach. The family will remain at the funeral home until 8 p.m. following the service to receive friends.
