LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - CHESAPEAKE

``How did this happen?''

The door has been opened and in comes vice. Virginia's legislature granted citizens the freedom to contribute to educational needs through a lottery. Where did the money go?

Now that appetites have been whetted for gambling, we see horse racing and pari-mutuel betting on its way. Our legislature came through for us again. In order to facilitate our education in horse tracks, the lawmakers have provided us with satellite participation centers.

Now that this outlet is coming home to roost on the corner of Military Highway and George Washington Highway, I, like many others in the community, find myself asking, ``How did this happen? This is a democracy, and I'm sure that most of Deep Creek's citizens would do anything to reverse these plans.''

Too late!

The state provision was legislated two years ago, and Chesapeake's zoning has that location zoned B-2. It's too late!

Maybe we can be aroused to the workings of our legislature. At the time proposed legislation comes up for debate, that's the time to speak up, complain, disagree and be heard, either pro or con.

Can our legislature reverse the provision for satellite off-track betting facilities? We have a better chance at the lottery.

Wake up, Virginia!

Some time ago, my daughter and I were having lunch at Old Country Buffet in Chesapeake. We left the car in the parking lot and were in the process of making selections at the buffet when an announcement was made requesting I go to the cashier.

It seems I had left my purse on the hood of our car, and it had been found by a passerby who turned it in to the cashier. Unfortunately he left without identifying himself, and I was unable to thank him personally.

In this day of somewhat lax morals, it comes as a revelation that such nice people do exist, and I'm sorry it has taken this long to offer my heartfelt thanks for this unknown man.
