24 ARRESTED, 23 ARE SOUGHT ON DRUG CHARGES IN PORTSMOUTH CHARGES STEM FROM AN INVESTIGATION STARTED IN MARCH.

Police have put a dent in the illegal street sale of drugs by arresting 24 people, including four juveniles, on charges of selling and distributing cocaine.

The arrests were made at a variety of locations in the city over the weekend. Several of the suspects were already in custody at the Portsmouth City Jail. One is a resident of Suffolk and another is a resident of Chesapeake. The rest are Portsmouth residents.

An additional 17 adults and six more juveniles were being sought on Monday, said G.A. Brown, Portsmouth police spokesman.

The suspects were all named Thursday in grand jury indictments. The charges stemmed from an investigation started in March by the police and the Norfolk office of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

As well, the York County sheriff's office provided surveillance equipment that greatly helped the investigation, Brown said. THE SUSPECTS
