Patricia Cole-Smith, daughter of Inez Cole of Norfolk, was appointed recently appellate judge to the Board of Immigration Appeals in Northern Virginia.

Cole, a graduate of Norview High School, earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa., and attended graduate school at Howard University. She earned her juris doctorate from the University of Maryland and is an active member of the Maryland Bar.

Prior to her appointment, she was a senior policy analyst at the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform. She is the recipient of the U.S. Attorney General's John Marshall Award, the INS General Counsel's Attorney of the Year Award, and the INS Commissioner's Superior Accomplishment Award.

The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry will honor three school districts' Teachers of the Year at a special awards banquet to be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Temple, 7001 Granby St.

Each of the following teachers will receive a certificate of achievement and a cash award for use in the classroom: Chrissy Kouzis, a teacher at Blair Middle School in Norfolk; Christina O. Holliday, a teacher at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, and Marie Reardon, a teacher at Trantwood Elementary School in Virginia Beach.

MILITARY PEOPLE

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Eleanor Odango-Clements, daughter of Nimpha O. Odango of the 600 block of Creamer Road, was recently selected as sailor of the quarter with Personnel Support Detachment, Norfolk.

She joined the Navy in 1984 and was chosen as the top performer from among all the sailors assigned to the command. She was cited for outstanding professional accomplishment, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing.

Teiena M. Sanderlin, daughter of Victor and Carolyn Latham of Norfolk, has enlisted in the Navy for guaranteed training in the apprenticeship program. Sanderlin will attend basic training at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.

Marine Pfc. Ricky S. Johnson, son of Marjorie S. and Marcus A. Johnson Sr. of the 2800 block of Gate House Road, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was promoted to his present rank. He is a 1994 graduate of Lake Taylor High School.

Marine Pfc. Taris T. Harmon, son of Larry J. and Rachel V. Harmon of the 200 block of Greenbrier Ave., recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 1993 graduate of Maury High School.

CAMPUS NOTES

Kimberly Eve O'Bryan, a recent graduate of Ferrum College and winner of its 1995 Music Student of the Year Award, has been accepted at The Westminster Choir College of Rider University, Princeton, N.J.

O'Bryan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert O'Bryan of Norfolk, is a graduate of Lake Taylor High School. At Ferrum, she received a bachelor of music and fine arts degree. At Westminster, she will pursue a master of music degree in performance vocal pedagogy.

Todd E. Heaton, a 1994 graduate of Norfolk Collegiate and a sophomore at Hampden-Sydney College, made the dean's list for the spring semester. Heaton, a biology and psychology major, is an aspiring medical school student who worked this summer as a student intern at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
