LAKELAND IN FOR A TEST AGAINST LUNENBURG CENTRAL

Lakeland football coach Ed Smither knows his team isn't in for an easy time against this week's opponent, Group A Lunenburg Central.

``I was worried about this week (before the season),'' he said. ``Lunenburg is in a small town (Victoria, Va.) where everybody goes to the football game on Friday.

It's going to be a good test. If we're going to be a good football team, we'll have to go in to a place like that and win.''

Smither added that the Cavaliers will have to get ``remotivated for football'' after Friday's win over Nansemond River.

A capsule look at this week's games:

Lakeland vs. Lunenburg Central

Date: Sept. 15

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Lunenburg Central

Records: Lakeland (1-0); Lunenburg Central (1-0)

Last year's result: Lakeland won, 20-14

Outlook: The Cavaliers will have to come down to earth after the big win over Nansemond River. The Chargers have played for eight of the last 11 state championships in Group A and blew out Park View, 42-0, last week. Lakeland won last year on a 60-yard touchdown run by Reginald Wiggins in the final two minutes.

The pick: Lakeland 20, Lunenburg Central 18. It won't be easy.

Nansemond River vs. Brunswick

Date: Sept. 15

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Brunswick

Records: Nansemond River (0-1); Brunswick (0-1)

Last year's result: Nansemond River won, 25-0

Outlook: Things couldn't look worse for the Bulldogs after their 55-0 loss to Southampton last week. Now they run into a Warrior team that lost to Lakeland for the first time in seven tries. An angry Nansemond River will probably take its frustration out on an overmatched Brunswick squad.

The pick: Nansemond River 38, Brunswick 0. Poor Bulldogs.

Nansemond-Suffolk vs. Gates Co. (N.C)

Date: Sept. 15

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Nansemond-Suffolk (0-2); Gates Co.

Last year's result: Nansemond-Suffolk won, 28-14

Outlook: The Saints are looking to rebound after a 13-6 loss to Poquoson. Terry Crigger's troops need to get back on track after two tough losses, so they should be ready.

The pick: Nansemond-Suffolk 28, Gates Co. 7. A Saints win.

Windsor vs. Franklin

Date: Sept. 15

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Franklin

Records: Windsor (1-0); Franklin (0-2)

Last year's result: Windsor won, 19-14

Outlook: These two have gone in separate directions in the first few games. Windsor was a 26-0 winner over Cumberland, while the Broncos have been outscored, 72-8, in their first two contests.

The pick: Windsor 21, Franklin 13. Could be a close one.

Southampton vs. Greensville Co.

Date: Sept. 15

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Greensville Co.

Records: Southampton (1-0); Greensville Co. (1-0)

Last year's result: Southampton won, 34-0

Outlook: The Indians should have a tougher time with Greensville Co. than they had in last week's rout of Brunswick. Southampton yielded only 60 yards of total offense and got 183 yards rushing from Rico Ivey.

The pick: Southampton 35, Greensville Co. 12. The Indians look tough.

Isle of Wight vs. Huguenot Academy

Date: Sept. 15

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Isle of Wight

Records: Isle of Wight (1-2); Huguenot Academy (2-1)

Last year's result: Huguenot Academy won, 44-12

Outlook: The Chargers are a difficult team to judge. They sandwiched a 47-0 win over Kenston Forest between losses to Atlantic Shores, 21-0, and Greenbriar Christian, 38-8. Huguenot Academy was last year's Virginia Commonwealth Conference champion.

The pick: Huguenot Academy 42, Isle of Wight 28. A tough district game for the Chargers. by CNB
