6 RACES IN 2 NIGHTS ON TAP AT LANGLEY

For local racing gurus, Langley Speedway is the place to be Friday and Saturday nights.

Four races on Friday night and two races on Saturday night will be the main attractions.

Beginning Friday night Langley Speedway will feature four races starting at 8 p.m. The first will be a 50-lap grand stock race, the second a 25-lap mini stock race, the third a 25-lap limited stock race and the last a 25-lap pure stock race.

The gates will open Friday at 3:30 p.m. Qualifying is at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday racing begins at 6 p.m. and the gates open at 2 p.m. Qualifying starts at 4 p.m.

Tickets for both nights remain on sale at Langley Speedway and are available at Ticketmaster. The cost is $18 for both nights. Youths 12 and under can get in for $2 each night. Season passes are only good for Friday night.

Wayne Wyatt, promoter of Langley Speedway, is optimistic as the big weekend is set to kick off.

``We hope to pack them in here,'' said Wyatt, in his first year as promoter. ``The All-Pro cars are very fast and there will be some top drivers.''

WARREN UPDATE: Norfolk native Phil Warren has wrapped up the NASCAR Mid-Atlantic championship in the Winston Racing Series for the late model division.

Warren, who has 17 victories at Langley, is still awaiting word on the national championship. That may be announced in the next couple of days or next week.

This weekend's late model race is the biggest of the season. The 150-lap race will feature the usual guys like Charlie Bryant Jr., Warren, Buddy Malish and others. The last late-model points race of the season will be Sept. 23.

SLIM JIM ALL-PRO SERIES: Saturday's race is a continuation of a scheduled 21-city NASCAR series tour. The actual series begins on March 18 at Nashville Speedway USA in conjunction with the NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division.

Mike Cope of Trinity, N.C., is one of the the featured drivers on the tour. As of Aug. 12, he is fifth in the points standings.

Bobby Labonte, a Winston Cup driver, is the owner of the the Cope team. Other drivers to watch are Mike Cope, points leader Hal Goodson and Toby Porter. by CNB
