LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

No relief

When will we in Great Bridge get some permanent relief from our water problem? I have to really scrimp to make a gallon of bottled water a day last for drinking and cooking, not to mention giving some to pets, plants and birds.

But if you have high blood pressure, bottled water is an absolute necessity.

The city water is ruining pipes, fixtures, shower curtains, mats and everything it is used for. The city will not reimburse us for any of it.

This has been happening for years and years. How have they gotten away with this for so long? Why do we have to continue to put up with this? How can they continue to build new homes with this problem?

The federal government says the water is not safe. What can we do?

Harassing smokers

Thomas Bray, a member of the Chesapeake School Board, has initiated a study to ban smoking at all school events, including activities held outside. This greatly concerns me.

I learned to smoke under the command of then-president Franklin D. Roosevelt, commander in chief, during World War II. I still enjoy this habit.

I have attended high school sporting events at our local schools since 1948. I have paid admission fees and taxes for educational activities.

Who is going to enforce this ban? The uniformed police will undoubtedly be given another duty - policing the air quality. I feel this ban will add to the personal harassment of smokers who have already been forced to go outside to smoke in the elements of the weather. I, for one, take great offense at the comments and personal harassment that non-smokers bestow and at being required to go outside to smoke my pipe.

I would like to remind Mr. Bray and other School Board members where the funds come from that support the schools and school activities - taxes!

One thing further. I have stewed for a year. I watched the Chesapeake City Council pass an ordinance on the placement of garbage cans due to one complaint from a civic league president that a dog sometimes enters her trash can. In this case, little thought or consideration was given to the elderly, disabled or the military whose spouse was deployed. We have a leash law. Why this ordinance? Pet owners should be responsible for their animals.

It seems that our present boards, commissioners and City Council are committing atrocities against law-abiding citizens.

A good deed

I am grateful to the lady who turned in my wallet with money and credit cards to the employees of Hardee's on Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake on Aug. 29.

It is refreshing to find there are still honest people in this world.
