STRONG WINDS BLOW UP GOOD FISHING

Fairly strong northeast winds provided plenty of spot fishing action Friday for pier anglers along the northern beaches.

Croaker, a few sea mullet and plenty of nice spot were landed throughout the afternoon at Kitty Hawk Pier. Avalon Pier reported a good run of spot during the early afternoon and scattered spot, bluefish and puppy drum later in the day.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught a few spot, bluefish and one nice flounder in the morning. Big spot, croaker, bluefish and puppy drum were taken during the afternoon.

Fishing was slow early in the day at Jennette's Pier, but afternoon spot fishing was good. At Outer Banks Pier, spot fishing was pretty good during most of the day.

South of Oregon Inlet, anglers on Rodanthe Pier landed keeper puppy drum and a few spot. Some bluefish and spot were taken on Avon Pier. Pompano weighing up to 2 1/4 pounds, bluefish and scattered spot were caught from Frisco Pier.

A few spot, puppy drum and pompano were landed in the surf along the northern beaches, but fishing became difficult during the afternoon as seas mounted.

Fair numbers of small bottom fish, a few bluefish and a handful of speckled trout were taken around Oregon Inlet. Sheepshead were caught by anglers fishing around the Bonner Bridge pilings.

Puppy drum and small bottom fish were beached in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton. Some yearling drum were landed just before dark Thursday at Cape Point. Puppy drum and some speckled trout were landed in the area Friday.

Bluefish and speckled trout were taken by surfcasters from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was good Friday morning, with nice-sized bluefish and a few albacore landed. Headboat action in the Manns Harbor area was slow, with a few pigfish and small croaker taken.

A good catch of tuna, dolphin and a few wahoo were reported from the First Crack, the only charter boat bluewater fishing off Oregon Inlet Friday. Five wahoo and one king mackerel were taken by the Eagle out of Hatteras.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 72.5 degrees Friday. by CNB
