A Navy gunner's mate was charged with the theft of military property after 50 unarmed grenades disappeared from the Spruance at Mayport Naval Station in Mayport, Fla.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeremy Warren Alexander faces a grand jury-type hearing Oct. 16 to determine if he could be court-martialed for the theft or whether the charges should be handled in another manner, Navy officials said.
Investigators arrested Alexander Aug. 10 at an apartment complex in Newport News, Va.
Alexander, 24, of St. Louis, was charged with the theft of military property, being absent without authorization, missing movement when his ship left port, disposing of government property without authorization and other charges relating to the transportation of the grenades.
Eighteen of the grenades have been recovered, but the Navy declined to comment on the other 32, saying the investigation is continuing.
