FISHERMAN DROWNED

An autopsy showed that a fisherman whose body was found in Western Branch Lake Sunday died of drowning, police said Monday.

Daniel William Darden, 37, of the 1100 block of Benton Road, apparently fell overboard while fishing Friday morning, police spokesman Mike Simpkins said.

Darden was last seen about 11:10 a.m. by his father, William I. Darden, who was fishing nearby in a separate boat and heard his son yell.

By the time the father pulled up two anchors and reached the spot, his son had disappeared.

The younger Darden was a poor swimmer and was not wearing a life jacket although life jackets were in his boat, Simpkins said.

Members of the Suffolk police dive team searched the lake for several hours Friday. They also dragged the lake from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and were assisted by Norfolk police, who patrol the Norfolk-owned lake, and a game warden. They were preparing to continue Sunday when the body was discovered about 8:45 a.m. by two fishermen.
