MAN RESCUED AFTER BOAT SINKS AT MOUTH OF CAPE FEAR RIVER

A man was rescued Thursday floating in a fish box after his fishing vessel sank near the entrance to the Cape Fear River.

Robert Bishop, 44, from South Port, N.C., was rescued by the fishing vessel Booger about 5 p.m. He was forced into the water after his 39-foot vessel Fish Hunter became disabled and sank in rough seas.

An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon alerted the Coast Guard to the distress about 3:30 p.m.

A Coast Guard helicopter from Elizabeth City and a 44-foot patrol boat from Coast Guard Station Oak Island responded. The patrol boat crew located the capsized boat and scoured the area for the fisherman.

Bishop, who suffered minor injuries, was picked up and taken to American Fish House in South Port.
