SOUTHEASTERN MAY CHANGE ITS COURSE ON GOLF FORMAT

Notes on a frayed white cuff. . . .

Southeastern District golf coaches seem to be favoring a weekly tournament-type format to replace the regular-season matches currently being played.

A proposal for the change may be made to athletic directors and principals before next year's schedule is adopted.

The Churchland football field is starting to show the wear and tear from all the city schools playing there this season.

The field was really in poor condition for Friday's Wilson-Western Branch game after a Thursday game between Churchland and Oscar Smith.

The Wilson football team is trying to battle its way out of a winless season. But sometime in the next 10 years, the school could become one of the few high schools in the nation with 500 victories.

Wilson currently has won 474 games.

Due to the weather last week, Wilson rescheduled its homecoming game. The Oct. 20 game with Norcom will be homecoming for the Presidents.

Ton Davis was among Wilson High School's all-time football greats, but his sons are making their mark in other sports at Churchland. Robert has alternated with Southeastern District Tournament medalist Jason McEwen as the 1-2 players on the golf team. Shemiah Davis played sweeper in soccer. Both have been coached by Duke Conrad. ``Shemiah probably was the best defender in our league,'' said Conrad.

Of the 320 players on the rosters of NBA teams at the present, 87 were former Portsmouth Invitational Tournament participants.

There were players of the year from 12 conferences in this year's PIT and only one - Western Carolina's Frankie King - was drafted.

The Southeastern District cross-country meet will be held at Churchland.

It has been set for Thursday, Oct. 26 beginning at 4 p.m.

The Eastern Region meet will be at Newport News City Park on Nov. 2.

Hampton University football coach Joe Taylor says he expects Norfolk State quarterback Aaron Sparrow ``to be high on the list of players watched by NFL scouts.''

Added Taylor: ``He's a scrambler and certainly should get an opportunity to play pro football.''

Sparrow has picked up the nickname ``Airin' Aaron'' at Norfolk State.

Sudden thought: when Sparrow graduated from Wilson he was regarded as one of the top half dozen high school quarterbacks in the country. Another that year was the Washington Redskins' Heath Shuler, who went on to college stardom at Tennessee. by CNB
