GRANBY CRUISES TO GOLF WIN WITH 5 LOW SCORERS, COMETS GET 120-SHOT EASTERN DISTRICT WIN.

Granby had the five low scorers in cruising to a 120-shot victory over runner-up Norview in the Eastern District golf tournament Thursday at Ocean View.

Cameron Tenney breezed to medalist honors in the 36-hole tourney with rounds of 73 and 72. His 145 gave him a 7-shot edge over teammates Jason Copeland, the defending champion, and Gary Crutcher.

Granby had a 604 total, following a 301 Wednesday at Stumpy Lake with 303 at Ocean View. Tenney, a 5-foot-7 1/2, 138-pound senior, was low scorer in the 30-player field each day.

His 2-over-par 72 Thursday included three birdies and five bogeys. Playing the back nine first, he bogeyed the first two holes.

``I was kind of nervous when I started,'' said Tenney. ``But then I settled down and played pretty well the rest of the way.''

Tenney said his real goal is for the Comets to get one of the two team berths to the state tournament up for grabs in next week's regional. ``I think we have a good shot at it,'' he said.

Granby coach Marty Bechtol, whose Comets have lost only one dual match in two years, called the team ``probably the best the school has had since 1964.''

Added Bechtol: ``Tenney and Copeland are the only seniors, so we're looking for another good team next year. Right now we're hoping for a good regional showing. The competition is so tight that we could finish in the top two - or seventh real quick.''

Granby placed all six of its players in the top nine in the district meet. Robert Boyd was fourth with 155, Matt Hahne fifth (158) and Bryan Knight ninth (179).

In gaining the second team berth from the district to the regional, Norview was led by Paul McMillian with 172 and Graham Lindsey with 175.

Maury, paced by J.R. Lockery's 180, finished third with 794. Lake Taylor was fourth (807) and Booker T. Washington fifth (842).

Three players from non-qualifying teams also gained regional berths. Maury's Lockery took the first position. Three tied for the other two positions at 197 - Lake Taylor's John Cachero, Booker T. Washington's Jonathan Elliott and Maury's Jeff Powers. Cachero and Elliott won a one-hole playoff for the two remaining berths. ILLUSTRATION: Photo by GARY C. KNAPP

Granby's Gary Crutcher, with a total round of 152, finished seven

back of teammate Cameron Tenney, whose 73-72-145 gave him the

medal.
