ROXANNE'S EYE MAY BE GAZING AT MEXICO AGAIN

Roxanne freed itself of the Mexican coastline Friday and began to reintensify while heading northwest toward the southern tip of Texas. But forecasters doubt it will ever get there.

Instead, the storm - which may regain hurricane strength - is forecast to turn west by this afternoon and then southwest, crossing into Mexico and steering to a position just northwest of Mexico City by Monday.

Miles Lawrence, a meteorologist at The National Hurricane Center in Miami, said some computer models disagree with that forecast. One calls for the storm to be near Brownsville, Texas, by Monday.

At 5 p.m. Friday, Roxanne was centered about 230 miles east of Tampico, Mexico, and was moving northwest near 8 mph with sustained winds of 60 mph.

With its center well away from land, the storm began to reorganize Friday with the formation of a distinctive eye and classic swirls of clouds feeding into the storm. Its clouds covered the entire southwest Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Campeche. Although tropical storm-force winds were no longer battering the coast, heavy rains continued to fall over much of Mexico.

The Mexican Weather Service extended tropical storm warnings and a hurricane watch from Carmen to La Pesca.

Roxanne has claimed four lives since slamming into the Yucatan Peninsula with winds of 115 mph earlier in the week. The storm has since flooded farmland, ruined crops, caused mudslides and forced thousands to flee their homes. ILLUSTRATION: TRACKER'S GUIDE
