SPECKLED TROUT TURN UP NORTH OF KITTY HAWK

Light winds and increasing water clarity resulted in the appearance of speckled trout in the surf along the northern Outer Banks beaches Friday.

Fair numbers of speckled trout were beached during the morning in sloughs north of Kitty Hawk Pier. Some action also was reported along the beach north of Nags Head Pier.

Gray trout were landed from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet Thursday night. Anglers caught small bottom fish, tailor bluefish and a few keeper flounder during the day.

Action along the beach south of Rodanthe consisted of only some small blues and bottom fish because of grassy conditions in the surf.

Some puppy drum, tailor bluefish and several large drum were landed Thursday evening at Cape Point. Scattered puppy drum and bottom fish were taken Friday.

Croaker, puppy drum, sea mullet and bluefish were landed in the surf from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Piers along the northern beaches reported slow fishing Friday.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught a few spot. Some bluefish, pompano and fair numbers of sea mullet were taken on Avalon Pier.

Nags Head Pier reported a few bluefish, bottom fish and speckled trout. Fishing was slow on Jennette's Pier, with only a few small bottom fish taken.

Plenty of small black drum, some small blues and a few mullet were caught on Outer Banks Pier.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported a few spot and croaker taken. Small blues and a few bottom fish were landed on Avon Pier.

Anglers on Frisco Pier had a good morning catching puppy drum weighing as much as seven pounds, croaker weighing up to two pounds, small blues and a few pompano.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was good, with tailor bluefish plentiful.

Catches of king mackerel were reported off Oregon Inlet near the 70-degree tower Friday. Dolphin fishing was good and tuna action was fair. Sailfish were released by the Rebait and the Gannet.

Wahoo and dolphin catches were good off Hatteras. Billfish action improved with a blue marlin and three sailfish released by the Hatteras Fever, blue marlin released by the Big Eye and the Lucky Chip, and sailfish released by the Wahoo and the Release.

Water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 72 degrees Friday. by CNB
