SMITHFIELD MEDICAL SOLD

Hampton Roads Healthcare Inc., the parent company of Obici Hospital in Suffolk, has added Smithfield Medical Center to its holdings, according to Obici marketing director Susan Stone.

Negotiations ended Sept. 29 with sale of the seven-doctor practice to Hampton Roads Healthcare for an undisclosed amount, Stone said.

``As far as the public is concerned, this is just a business transaction,'' Stone said. ``There will be no visible or immediate changes at Smithfield Medical Center.''

But in the works are plans to expand medical services Obici offers to patients in Isle of Wight County, Stone said. She would not elaborate on specific plans.

Even before buying the medical practice, Hampton Roads Healthcare was a partial owner of Smithfield Medical Center's new building at 919 S. Church St. Obici leases space in the building to specialists affiliated with the hospital. by CNB
