V.A. SAUNDERS

V.A. Saunders, 79, of 15000 Benns Church Blvd., died Monday, Oct. 23, 1995, in his residence.

He was a native of Isle of Wight County and retired after 44 years of service as a sales representative from ITT Gwaltney. Mr. Saunders was a member of Benns United Methodist Church, its Men's Bible Class, and was a trustee of the church. He was a past treasurer and past member of the Official Board of Benns United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn T. Saunders; two daughters, Mrs. Ann Douglas S. Avery and her husband, Joseph W. Avery of Roanoke, and Dr. Drusilla S. Powell of Chesapeake, and her husband, Robert C. Powell; step-mother, Kate Harrison Saunders of Franklin; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Walthall Avery of Roanoke, Edward Douglas Avery of Roanoke, William Saunders Avery of Roanoke; and Robert Curtis Powell Jr. of Chesapeake.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Benns United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred L. Breeden and the Rev. Edward M. Garrett Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home, and suggests memorial contributions be made to the New Building Fund, Benns United Methodist Church, 14571 Benns Church Road, Smithfield, Va., 23430.
