ELECTION NUMBERS CHANGE SLIGHTLY

The winners in last Tuesday's election remain the same, but the numbers have changed.

Unofficial results released late Tuesday were scrutinized by election officials the next day. On Thursday, they released revised figures - official results that were certified to the state Board of Elections.

In the only local contest, the clerk of court's race, incumbent Henry C. Murden got 6,759 votes to 4,581 for his challenger, Gene T. Strickland. The numbers reported Tuesday night were 6,841 for Murden and 4,758 for Strickland.

Incorrect numbers from six of the city's 19 precincts were reported in early returns. Some of the numbers were transposed or written incorrectly when the poll workers called in results, said registrar Patsy Bremer.

Suffolk's final results in the 18th district Senate race also varied slightly from the unofficial figures released Tuesday. L. Louise Lucas, who was re-elected, got 2,692 votes in Suffolk and her challenger, F.M. ``Frank'' Slayton, got 657. Earlier figures reported were 2,703 for Lucas and 667 for Slayton.

The numbers for the other candidates remained unchanged.

In all, 11,342 people - or about 46 percent of the city's registered voters - turned out to vote in Suffolk. Those numbers were unavailable Tuesday night.
