PIER FISHING MAKES A COMEBACK AFTER A SLOW START SATURDAY

Windy weather heralding the arrival of a cold front had little effect on Saturday morning's fishing.

Action was slow Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, but picked up Sunday afternoon.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier landed a few trout Saturday.

Speckled trout weighing as much as 3 pounds were decked on Avalon Pier Saturday morning, along with a few puppy drum. Small bluefish were landed late in the afternoon. Puppy drum, speckled trout and sea mullet were caught Sunday by anglers using fresh mullet for bait.

Nags Head Pier fishermen using white bucktail rigs landed trout weighing as much as 4 pounds, 4 ounces, and puppy drum weighing between 5 and 8 pounds Saturday.

A 4-pound, 10-ounce black drum also was taken. Lots of small puppy drum, some speckled trout and sea mullet were caught Sunday afternoon from the pier. Some medium-sized spot also were taken around midday.

Speckled trout fishing was good on Jennette's Pier Saturday morning. Scattered sea mullet and blues also appeared in catches. A 31 1/2-inch striped bass was landed by Dillon Jones of Nags Head. Action was only mediocre Sunday.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught speckled trout and small bluefish most of the day Saturday. Tailor blues were taken steadily on fireball rigs baited with mullet Sunday.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported good puppy drum fishing Saturday. Fishing was slow Sunday morning, but the puppy drum were biting again by late afternoon.

Some mullet, spot, a few puppy drum, skates and speckled trout were landed on Avon Pier during the weekend.

Frisco Pier reported slow fishing both days because of rough seas.

Scattered puppy drum, speckled trout and some 15- to 20-pound stripers were landed along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet Saturday. Action slowed Sunday except around Oregon Inlet where good catches of puppy drum were reported along the north beach.

A few puppy drum and speckled trout were taken from Rodanthe to Buxton Saturday. Fishing improved Sunday afternoon, with plenty of puppy drum landed between ramps 23 and 34.

Some trout, sea mullet and black drum also were taken. A few drum and small blues were landed during the day Saturday at Cape Point. Strong winds put a damper on fishing Saturday night, but small bluefish, some sea mullet, speckled trout, keeper flounder and a few mixed-size drum were beached Sunday.

Good numbers of puppy and bluefish were taken along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet on Saturday. Action slowed during the afternoon and remained slow during the rest of the weekend.

Strong winds kept offshore action to a minimum throughout the weekend along the Dare Coast. A few boats fished in the Gulf Stream off Oregon Inlet Saturday and caught a few tuna.

Boaters around Oregon Inlet landed some nice puppy drum in deep water around the Bonner Bridge during the weekend. A number of big stripers were taken by anglers casting artificial lures around the revetment on the south side of the inlet.

Strong winds forecast for the next few days should slow fishing activity in the ocean, but trout and puppy drum should continue to be taken in protected areas in the sound.
