RECERTIFICATION: Suffolk City Treasurer Ronald H. Williams has earned recertification as a certified government treasurer from the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service and the Division of Continuing Education of the University of Virginia.

Certification typically takes two or more years to complete and requires attendance at educational workshops, seminars, classes and lectures.

To maintain certification, candidates must complete an additional 60 hours of continuing education within four years.

ESSAY WINNERS: At a recent ``Learn Not To Burn'' assembly at Southwestern Elementary School, essay contest winners were presented watches.

Winners, announced by ``Sparky'' the Fire Dog, are: Betsy Chan, fifth grade; Ashley Crowder, fourth grade; Kellie Daughtrey and James Riddick, third grade; Amy Wright, second grade; Bonnie Nelms, first grade; and Jeremy Hall and Joshua Baird, for kindergarten.

Firefighters brought ``Sparky'' and a fire truck for a recent visit to the school.

FEATURED TEACHER: Lakeland High School teacher Amy Herrmann was recently featured on a Virginia Department of Education Staff Development Hour program broadcast on WHRO-TV and other public TV stations statewide called ``Teachers as Researchers.''

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT: Tina Gwaltney, a senior at Lakeland High School, was one of two Hampton Roads recipients of a $350 YWCA scholarship.

The YWCA of South Hampton Roads recognized young women, who, while still in high school, have contributed to the empowerment of their gender and the elimination of racism. Interest in and concern for peers, scholarship, and leadership ability were evaluated also by the judges during interviews for the two scholarships.

Tina actively participates in a number of extracurricular activities both at school and in her local church. She is a member of the Carrsville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary and a junior volunteer at Southampton Memorial Hospital in the physical therapy department.

She is recognized by her teachers as possessing ``maturity beyond her years and a genuine concern for her peers.''
