THIS MONTH, MUSEUMS DABBLE IN THE DRAMATIC

THERE SEEM TO BE as many performances as exhibits this month in area museums.

The Suffolk Museum offers an adult-oriented play, ``Poppycock,'' and a children's play, ``Tempest in a Teacup.''

They also offer music, poetry and skits by the Coventry Choir, Lakeland High School drama students and local pianists.

The Isle of Wight Museum offers reminders of World War II.

Here is a look at December activities:

ISLE OF WIGHT MUSEUM

A display of antique business machines continues.

A display of Christmas items focusing on antique toys continues through Dec. 30.

Dec. 7 - A World War II exhibit features personal mementoes such as letters and cards. The display illustrates the personal side of war, in addition to a collection of guns and helmets.

MILES CARPENTER FOLK ART

No special exhibits scheduled for December.

RAWLS MUSEUM

Dec. 7, 14, 21 - ``Thursdays After School Art'' for children 8 to 14. 4 to 5:30 p.m. Instructor, Gail Saunders, teaching basic drawing. $25 for museum members, $28 for others. Supplies needed are drawing pad, pencil, ruler.

RIDDICK'S FOLLY

``Tea Parties and Other Fads,'' an exhibit about tea, coffee, chocolate, tobacco and spices, continues through Jan. 10.

Dec. 10 and 13 - Gingerbread workshop on the 10th from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and on the 13th from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Cost $6 to museum newsletter subscribers, $8 for others.

Dec. 16 - Old-fashioned Christmas with Santa lunch and photo session, from 11 to noon, then from noon to 1 p.m. $10, including photographs, $6 for adult lunch.

SUFFOLK MUSEUM

``Works by Karen Breeden'' continues through Jan. 28. She is the winner of the Suffolk Art League's 1994 Juried Exhibition.

An exhibit about ``Virginia's Civil Rights Movement'' also continues through Jan. 28. It features photographs, newspaper clippings and magazine covers from the end of slavery through the end of World War II.

Dec. 8 - ``Poppycock,'' a Victorian musical comedy for adults. Free. 8 to 9:45 p.m.

Dec. 9 - Children from 5 to 14 can learn to make and decorate 5x7 gingerbread picture frames. Colored candies for decorations provided. Cost $6.

Dec. 9 - Children's play, ``Tempest in a Teacup.'' Free. 11 a.m. to noon.

Dec. 10 - Reception for artist Karen Breeden, from 2 to 3 p.m.

Dec. 10 - ``Holiday Treats,'' featuring music, poetry and skits by the Coventry Choir, Lakeland High School drama students, local piano students. From 3 to 5 p.m. Free

Dec. 12 - Twelve Days of Christmas ornament making workshop for children from 5 to 12. Their polymer clay ornaments and paper ornaments will be displayed on a tree at the museum through Jan. 2. Workshop hours are from 10 a.m. to noon. Fee $6.

Dec. 16 - ``Winter Wonderland'' workshop for children 7 to 12. Instructor Lynn Dawson. 10 a.m. to noon. Fee $6.

WAKEFIELD FOUNDATION
