YOUTH BOOT CAMP WILL OPEN JAN. 1 IN ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY

A youth boot camp aimed at rehabilitating juveniles convicted of minor offenses will open Jan. 1 in Isle of Wight County.

An agreement was reached Tuesday between the city of Richmond and the state Department of Youth and Family Services to send up to 45 youths between the ages of 14 and 17 to the former Nansemond Correctional Unit, which closed in 1991.

The camp will serve at least 25 youths from Richmond, and an added 20 could come from throughout Virginia, said Sheila Hill-Christian, juvenile justice services administrator for Richmond.

``We're not talking about die-hard criminals,'' Isle of Wight Supervisor Phillip Bradshaw said. ``These are non-violent juveniles who will be offered rehab in a boot-camp scenario.'' by CNB
