JAMES J. BOOKER JR.

James Judson Booker Jr., 88, formerly of Chesapeake, died Jan. 3, 1996. He was born Aug. 14, 1907 in Richmond County, Va., the son of the late James Judson and Myrtle Hall Booker.

He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond and a master's degree from William and Mary. He did further graduate study at Columbia University and the University of Virginia. A lifelong educator, he began his career in education as a teacher and coach at Callao High School and held principalships at White Stone High School, Deep Creek High School and Cradock High School. In 1966 he was named Director of Instruction for the Portsmouth School System and served in that capacity until his retirement. He also served as chairman of the Virginia Committee of the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.

Active in community affairs, Mr. Booker was a charter member and first president of the Deep Creek Ruritan Club and a member of the Cradock Lion's Club. He served on the American Lung Association Board of Directors, the American Cancer Society Board, and the American Red Cross Board. He was a life member of the PTA and after his retirement, he was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Chesapeake City School System. He also served on the Deep Creek Senior Citizens Council.

A Baptist, Mr. Booker taught Bible study classes and served on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees at Deep Creek Baptist Church. Most recently, he was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Dr. James Judson Booker III, of Wytheville; a daughter, Elizabeth B. Wilson of Richmond; a sister, Florence M. Booker of Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, E. Derwin Booker of Farnham; three grandchildren, Margaret Booker Sproule of Anderson, S.C., James Judson Booker IV of Wytheville and David John Wilson of Richmond.

Funeral services will be conducted by Mr. Vivian Wheeler at Farnham Baptist Church in Farnham, Va., Saturday, Jan. 6, 1996 at 11 a.m. Visitation with the family will be at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock, Va. on Friday, Jan. 5, 1996 from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to the cemetery fund of the Farnham Baptist Church.
