REGISTRATION CLOSES WEDNESDAY FOR NBA CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY

Entries have closed for the 39th annual Tidewater Women's Bowling Association Championship, but bowlers can register for the 42nd annual Norfolk Bowling Association Championship through Wednesday.

Reserved entries in the men's tenpin tournament closed Jan. 17.

The TWBA tourney has drawn a field of 166 teams. There will be 572 bowlers competing in singles and 286 doubles teams.

The TWBA meet will be over three weekends - Feb. 3-4, 10-11 and 17-18. Teams will bowl at Pinboy's at the Beach, and singles and doubles will be rolled at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven.

Once again, the TWBA tournament is divided into two divisions, based on averages.

``We had 176 teams last year,'' said TWBA secretary Reba Callis. ``So we're pleased with our entry.''

Last year, the TWBA paid out nearly $12,000 to winners. This year, the prize fund is expected to exceed $11,600.

The NBA tourney will be over a four-weekend period beginning Feb. 10 and concluding March 3.

``We're hopeful of matching or exceeding our entries from last year when we had 250 teams,'' said Pres Carraway, secretary of the NBA. ``Our membership is down a little this year, but we're looking for strong participation in the tournament.''

Teams will vie at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. Individual events will be bowled at Indian River Lanes.

Bowler of the Week honors go to Ron Burton, the newest hero in what may be the area's smallest tenpin league.

Burton pitched a 300 game in the Wednesday Morning Senior League at Little Creek. This league has only four teams.

It was the first perfect game for the 60-year-old Burton and led to his first 700 series. He had the 300 between games of 206 and 199 for 705.

Burton is a 157-average bowler.

Tenpin topics: Never has there been a more exciting week in the Big Chiefs League at Indian River. Five different bowlers opened with eight strikes in a row. Dean Stephens and Cecil Ausby went on to register 300 games. Stephens had a 770 series and Ausby finished with 667. . . . It was reported here last week that Nick Adams would get only a patch for his 300 game in an unsanctioned league. Actually, he will get a cash prize and a trophy from the league. . . . Just a pin off 300 games were a pair of Indian River bowlers in two different leagues. Jeff Harrison's big game came in a 773 series in the Ball & Chain League and Mike Smith's 299 was fired in a 737 series in the Sunday Nite Hawks League. . . . It's not too late to enter the Virginia State Women's Tournament, scheduled in Roanoke. The deadline for entries has been extended until Jan. 30 due to the recent snow that inundated that area. . . . Teammates Rodney Waterfield and Dave Pribble both racked up 700 series in the Military Doubles League at Pinboy's of Military. Waterfield hit 736 and Pribble tossed an even 700. In the same league, Louis Smith took scoring honors with a 264 game and 757 series. . . . Lawrence Irvin Jr. flipped a 296 game and just missed the coveted 800 series with 797 in the Tuesday Men's Commercial League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. . . . Jeremy Allard, who averages 155 in the YABA Major/Senior League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven, blasted games of 189, 239 and 221 for a 647 series. Also in this league, 200 games were posted by Mike Hill (202 with 133 average), Justin Malbone (203 game with 145 average), Felicia Adams (209 game, 146 average) and Don Brown (201 game, 132 average). . . . Other youth league gems: Jeff Tipton's 662 series in the Saturday YABA League at Indian River and Bobby Bernard's 651 in the Junior/Major/Senior League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. . . . Kim Phillips shot her highest series ever with 623 in the Wednesday Nite Mixed League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. It also was her first 600. . . . How's this for beating your average? Ken Gray zipped 149 pins over with a 266 game in the Late Starters League at IR. He averages only 117. . . . In the Lynnhaven Masters League, Gil Salang and Ron Schindler both posted 290 games. . . . Frank Maule III whacked his 795 series in the Bill Prince Match Point Classic League at Little Creek. . . . Sharon Borgeson had a women's record game of 286 in the Ford Mixed League at Indian River, finishing with a 638 series. . . Chesapeake had special thrills. Elmer Navratil, 74, had his first 200 game (203). He averages 127. And Vernon Dockery, 76 years young, chalked up a 134 triplicate.

Duckpin data: It won't go in the record book but wonder if anybody has ever matched the ``20-pin spare'' chalked up by Mike Wall in the Industrial League? Wall threw a strike but fouled. After resetting the pins, he struck again - which counts as a spare due to the foul. . . . Herb Ripley expresses his thanks to the bowler who remembered him with a special Christmas gift. . . . Ten-year-old Angel Bolin, who averages 67, tossed a 120 game in the Victory Youth League. In the same league, 97-average Travis Dortch rolled a 130 game. underwent leg surfor champ for champ ry. . . . Sylvia Hart had four strikes in a row in her 155 game in the Monday Morning Mixed League. . . . Helen Coner, a 102-average bowler, had a triple strike in her 147 game in the Thursday Night Ladies League. . . . Karen Kirkpatrick also registered a triple en route to a 154 game in the Elimination Doubles League. She averages 95. . . . Campbell's Pinbusters won the first-half in the Tuesday Nite Mixed League. . . . Anybody whose team falls into a losing streak will have to sympathize with The Angels in the Thursday Night Ladies League. The Angels have lost 24 games in a row. Must make you feel like the devil. by CNB
