BATTEN SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Virginia Wesleyan College announced a new scholarship program Thursday that will provide the school's first fully endowed scholarship covering tuition, room and board.

The Batten Scholars Program, named for Jane and Frank Batten, who initiated the endowment, will be awarded after the college's annual scholarship competition Feb. 22 and 23. High school seniors will vie for 10 scholars positions and scholarships during the two-day contest. The Batten award, worth $17,000, tops the list of prizes.

``Not only will this help the students coming to Virginia Wesleyan, it helps in the recruitment of even better students,'' said Martha Rogers, vice president of enrollment management.

``Others will be drawn here in part because of this.''

The Batten Scholars program has been established by Jane Batten, chairman of school's board of trustees, and her husband, Frank, chairman of Landmark Communications. The fund helps the school's $25 million fund-raising campaign which includes a goal of $5.5 million for annual and endowed scholarships.
