CENTURIES OF GARDENING WILLIAMSBURG SYMPOSIUM CELEBRATES THE ROOTS OF AMERICAN GARDENS

THE 50TH ANNUAL Williamsburg Garden Symposium gets under way April 14 with the theme ``A Celebration of American Gardening.'' The program features: Mac Griswold, editor of Garden Design magazine; Dean Norton from Mount Vernon; Allan Armitage from the University of Georgia; Mary Painter, Virginia Natives nurserywoman; and Pauline Runkle, a floral designer from Boston. It ends Tuesday evening with a special session on ``Gardens for Children.''

The symposium opens at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Williamsburg Lodge; Monday and Tuesday sessions are at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery. It is open to the public and costs $275 per person for the three-day symposium. For reservations, call (804) 220-7255. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
