THOMAS NAMED HEALTH DIRECTOR

A former director of nursing at the Outer Banks Medical Center, Ann B. Thomas, will become Dare County's new health director on May 20.

Thomas will succeed Harry Johnson, who is retiring. The announcement was made by Dr. Barry Welsh, chairman of the county's health board. Welch said several dozen people applied for the job. The board, he said, interviewed only six of the applicants.

``The board was delighted to offer the position to someone of Ann's immense talent,'' Welch said. ``She has a gread deal of experience and knowledge. Ann will be a real credit to Dare County.''

Thomas, 40, currently serves as a nursing supervisor in the emergency department at New York University Medical Center. She was employed at the Outer Banks Medical Center from 1980 until 1988. Thomas met her husband on the Outer Banks and followed him to New York where he worked as an actor and restaurateur. However, the Thomas' retained their Dare County home on Spindrift Trail.

``The new position represents an ideal opportunity for me to utilize my experience in health care,'' Thomas said. ``I'm looking forward to promoting and enhancing the programs now being offered by the health department.

``I've always been impressed with the county's ability to deliver essential health care services in a professional and efficient manner,'' she said.

Thomas will earn $48,606 a year. by CNB
