Richard Xavier Kauffmann, 83, of the 300 block of Louisa Avenue, died April 2, 1996, in his home.
Born in Richmond on Dec. 6, 1912, he was the son of the late Francis Xavier and Mary Rye Kauffmann. Mr. Kauffmann was a member of Saint Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and a member of the Father Nicholas Habits Council of the Knights of Columbus. He owned Kauffmann's Sandwich Shop on 17th street from 1947 to 1965. Prior to that he was a manager with Colonial Stores. After retirement, he was employed at the Mayflower Apartments and was affectionately known as ``Mr. Mayflower.''
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lotz Kauffmann; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Kauffmann; three sons, Richard Xavier Kauffmann Jr. and Vincent Paul Kauffmann both of Atlanta, Ga. and the Rev. James Francis Kauffmann, pastor of Saint Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Woodford, Va.; and four grandchildren.
His son, the Rev. James F. Kauffmann will preside over the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, April 8, 1996, at 7:30 p.m. at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1404 Pacific Avenue. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. at the church as well as after the Mass. Interment will be on Tuesday April 9, 1996, at noon at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church Building Fund, c/o the Reverend James Kauffmann, Pastor, 3022 Stuart Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23221. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
