A 36-year-old man who was injured in a boating accident early Saturday in Chesapeake died Sunday, a hospital official said.

Barry W. Tant Sr. was pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m. in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he had been flown by helicopter.

Tant was critically injured when the boat in which he, his wife and a friend were riding smashed into a barge shortly after midnight.

The barge was located at a dredge site about a mile west of the Locks Park Boat Ramp off North Battlefield Boulevard.

Tant's wife, Bertha Virginia Tant, 37, was killed in the accident. The Tants had lived in the 800 block of Gammon Road in Virginia Beach.

A friend, Patrick Cassidy, 41, of the 1900 block of Buttonwood St. in Chesapeake, was listed in stable condition at Sentara Norfolk General Sunday night.

The state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is investigating the accident.
